Redefine Surgery Closes Oversubscribed Pre-Seed Round and Announces Catalyst OrthoScience Partnership

Backed by practicing surgeons, Redefine Surgery has secured an undisclosed fresh pre-seed round to accelerate commercial growth for its computer vision- and AI-powered, real-time surgical guidance platform designed to improve procedural efficiency, consistency, and outcomes for surgeons, patients, hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers.

The startup did not disclose the latest funding amount but confirmed that the pre-seed round brought its total funds raised to date to $10 million.

To drive this commercial expansion, Redefine Surgery has also announced that Catalyst OrthoScience has joined as a Founding Partner to develop an integrated surgical intelligence ecosystem that connects data, decisions, and outcomes specifically for shoulder replacement procedures.

Commenting on the fundraising, Peter Verrillo, CEO and Co-Founder of Redefine Surgery, said: “Closing this round and establishing our partnership with Catalyst are two important steps toward bringing surgical intelligence into everyday practice.”

Redefine is showcasing its technology this week at ICSES in Vancouver, building on its presentation at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons earlier this year.

Redefine Surgery is Building Physical AI for Surgery

By the end of this decade, Redefine Surgery strives to build an AI that learns from the world’s best surgeons and transfers their mastery to every operating room. “We have an opportunity to move beyond the traditional boundaries of surgical technology and rethink how artificial intelligence and surgical robotics can improve surgery,” said Dr. Anthony Miniaci, MD, FRCSC, President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

“The next generation of surgical guidance will be an intelligent partner and collaborator to the surgeon, understanding anatomy, helping optimize incisions and surgical exposure, and optimizing implant position based on a personalized plan for every patient.”

“The goal is to move beyond simply navigating an implant to technology that understands the entire procedure and helps the surgeon deliver the best possible surgery, every time,” added Anthony Miniaci.

Redefine Joins the Roster of VC Funded Surgical AI Startups

With this round, Redefine Surgery enters into a cohort of AI surgical intelligence startups that have attracted millions in funding to pioneer the next generation of physical AI.

More recently, Illuminant Surgical has raised an $8.4 million Seed round to build a surgical guidance platform. “Surgery is one of the highest-stakes environments in the world, and even small mistakes can have life-changing consequences,” said Dr. James Hu, co-founder and co-CEO. “We built Skylight (a projection-based clinical guidance platform) to help doctors avoid those errors, streamline every step, and operate with millimeter-level precision where it matters most.”

In another deal, Hypervision Surgical, a medical technology startup developing AI-powered next-generation intelligent surgical imaging systems, raised £17 million in a Series A funding round. Michael Ebner, CEO and co-founder of Hypervision Surgical, said: “This Series A marks a major milestone in our mission to power surgical intelligence through hyperspectral vision.”
